I really enjoyed taking my 7 year old to the Pacific Marine Mammal Rescue Center yesterday. We wanted to get out and do something different and this was perfect.
I have driven past the Laguna Canyon facility many times and made a mental note to visit. Yesterday, turned out to be that day.
Just a quick jump on the 133 fwy and minutes from our home, Vaughn and I decided on this spontaneous visit. So, we hopped in the car and went.
The facility is small and that day, there were around 20 marine mammals being cared for. The volunteers at the center were anxious to help fill us in on the mammals plights. Most were Sea Lion pups and a few Northern California Elephant Seal Pups that were being nursed back to health from malnutrition and starvation. Once the pups are strong enough, they will be released back into the Pacific.
Vaughn enjoyed watching the pups slide across the cement pads on their wet bellies and reading the information boards. Did you know that plastic bags are one of the leading causes of death among sea mammals?
We were ready to leave in about an hour but not before Vaughn purchased his book, "Astro, The Stellar Sea Lion" which we read together later that evening.
Will we visit again? Vaughn says, "Absolutely".
