Top 10 Unique Earth-Friendly Baby Shower Gifts

August 7, 2009 | by Angela Jia Kim, Owner, OmAroma SkinCare and New Mom-to-be

Recently I was asked to be a guest on various TV segments on throwing an Eco-Chic Baby Shower. Finding unique earth-friendly gifts was challenging but a lot of fun!

After hours of research and mulling over the best gifts and resources out there, here are some of my favorite finds:

1. Organic Monkey Gift Set – $59.99
Conventional cotton is grown with pesticides that can be toxic for your baby. When it comes to plush stuffed animals, babies love to put those cute things in their mouths so make sure it’s toxic-free! Book Bouquet pairs this sweet orange monkey with an organic cotton book, too!

2. Organic Moses Baby Basket – $150.00
If you want to “wow” Mom-to-Be, this is the gift to get from Saige Nicole’s Baby Boutique. It’s practical and portable, and it will stay in the family for a long time as a gorgeous heirloom.

3. Organic Onesies – $24.00
Simply Chickie Clothing has organic onesies that have “attitude” with cute sayings imprinted on the front and in the bottom area.

4. Earth-Friendly Thank You Notes – $45.00 for 12
Give some handmade seed “Thank You” notes from Bloomin’, and you can use it three ways: as a gift for the mom-to-be who can then send them out to thank the guests, and the guests can plant the invite and it will grow!

5. BPA-Free Baby Feeding Set – $40.00
One Small Step has an orange feeding set that is BPA-free. Complete with a bento box, Baby will be eating in earth-friendly style! The best part? One Small Step donates 10% of its proceeds to a non-profit organization.

6. Organic Chocolates for Mom (and Dad!)
Don’t forget Mom in this equation… pamper her with pure chocolate from Askinosie! My sister, a bonafide chocolate lover, turned me onto these delicious organic chocolates. You have to check out their website and send them fan email. It is almost as cool as their chocolates.

7. Organic Cotton Baby Set – from $22.00 – 45.00
Want to give an organic clothing set that will set Baby off to a great start? Create your gift set from My Little Pakora with an Om Baby onesie, blanket, bib, hat, and pants.

8. Organic Skincare for Mom1mr_label_high-500x500 – $149.00
Of course I have to mention Om Aroma’s new 1 Minute Ritual to Radiant Skin! It’s designed for the eco-chic woman who doesn’t have a lot of time to devote to a skincare regime but wants to be green and get gorgeous. The best part is that this 4-step process lasts for about 3 months!

9. Eco-Chic Diapers – $26.99 for starter kit
I admit it: I am partial to these diapers because of how cute G Diaper’s new ruffled pink diapers are. This is sure to be a hit at any baby shower, and the best thing is that the diaper part is biodegradable and flushable. With 50 million disposable diapers entering the landfill daily, this is the perfect solution- and it’s so stylish!

socks
10. Organic Baby Socks – $32.00
Pink Olive Boutique carries the sweetest organic baby socks that have earth-friendly messages such as recycle, world, and earth. Imagine those tiny toes in these tiny socks!

Some baby shower resources:

1. MyRegistry.com
This has been a fantastic way for me to create our baby registry for practical items at BuyBuy Baby and more unique gifts from boutique retailers – all under one umbrella.

2. PaperlessPost.com
Want to create eco-friendly invitations that are classy and gorgeous? Then check this new website out. It’s a definite step up from Evite, and you actually feel like you are getting an invite in the mail, complete with a stamp!

3. DineGreen.com
If you want to host a baby shower at a green restaurant, this is a great resource to find the best green restaurants in your area.

Daily Lunch Box Ideas: Beat The "Boring Lunch" Dilemma

by Wendy Navarro, Mom of 3 and owner Saige Nicoles baby and toddler boutique www.SaigeNicoles.com

As the mom of three, it’s not easy to change things up and keep my children’s lunches interesting enough to eat 180 days out of the year and with school just around the corner I’ve been busy scouring the web and asking other moms for proven lunch box ideas that children will eat. During my mom with a mission quest I came across an amazing (sometimes overwhelming) amount of information; from ideas for healthy lunches, fun lunches, lunch ideas even I wouldn’t eat and clever no-waste lunch box ideas I’d not heard of before. I’m not a health expert or lunch guru by any means but healthy alternatives to an otherwise monotonous lunch routine sounds like a good idea for me and my children.

I chose the following list of lunch ideas based on a few criteria:

1. Tried and true

2. Easy to make and fit with our busy schedule

3. Provides a well balanced lunch

4. Simply sounded yummy.

Food For Thought:
  • Take your kids shopping and make them a part of the planning process.
  • Pack lunches in insulated, BPA Bisphenol-A free tote like the cute polka dot number I found available at BUILTNY.com.
  • Purchase no waste lunch box kits like the one shown below right available at KidsKonserve.com It comes with everything you need and is all washable and reusable!
  • Test drive newly found ideas on your children at home.
  • Pack cold packs to keep food cool.
  • Choose low-fat or low sugar alternatives.
  • Look for brain foods containing omega rich ingredients. Parenting.com has a nice list which includes the yummy Pomegranate and Blueberry Juice by MinuteMaid shown below.
  • Remind your children to keep food from prolonged exposure to the sun.

With three children at 3 different stages in life I thought it would be fun to list their #1 favorite lunch first (I can usually pack this lunch for them without fail 3X’s a week with no complaining).

  • Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches: Daughter, Saige, Freshman High School: Peanut butter and banana sandwich on wheat, 5-6 large strawberries, ice cold bottled water, and cookie.
  • Classic Tuna Sandwich: Son, Quentin, 7th Grade: Tuna on sourdough (separate tuna in different container to avoid sbs (soggy bread syndrome), 1 whole pickle, juice, red apple and graham crackers with honey dip.
  • Make Your Own Lunchable: Son Vaughn, Pre-school: Crackers, thinly sliced turkey or ham, sliced cheddar cheese (he likes to make his own cracker sandwiches), ice cold water, mix of blueberries and strawberries, cookie.
  • Shake it Up Chicken Cesar Salad: (KraftFoods.com) Great with left-overs from last nights chicken dinner: Torn green lettuce, chicken strips, about 4 grape tomatoes, Cesar salad dressing (separate container), ice cold bottled water, and yogurt (hint: freeze squeezable yogurts and by lunch time they’ve thawed and are cold).
  • Frito Pie: (FamilyFun.com) Take your favorite chili recipe, with or without meat, heat it through, and send it to school in a thermos with a cup top. In separate bags, send along some baked tortilla chips and shredded Monterey jack or cheddar cheese. Have your children arrange some crumpled strips along the bottom of the thermos cup, then add shredded cheese and top with warm chili. The chili melts the cheese, and yum a lunch your kids will gobble up. Pack with carrot sticks and ice cold bottled water.
  • Turkey and Swiss in Whole Grain Pita: (Parenting.com) Use Pita bread to make a classic favorite. Include cucumber and lettuce for crunch. Pack with raisins or carrots and yogurt dip, juice and cookie.
Interesting Fact: Did you know: Some schools in Australia provide children with a fruit break before morning tea. Cheers!

Resources:
I hope these lunch ideas help you beat the boring lunch dilemma and provide you and your family with a few new, yummy ideas. If you have any other great ideas please post them.

P.S. As my husband was reading this he wanted to be sure and include that these are great ideas for hubby's lunch too. Enjoy!
